Happy 2015, all! Here’s to another great year of reading. But before we go, I’m going to jump on the bandwagon and do a little recapping of my own. So here we go:

2014 was quite a year! I read 60 books in all, half of the year for my final semester as an undergraduate and half for my first months as an unleashed degree holding adult. And because I have the time on my hands and my reading is now ALSO on my hands, I decided it might be fun to create a spreadsheet analyzing my reading for the year: I’m calling it The Great 2014 Reading Audit.

So, what did I read in 2014? In some ways, it was a pretty typical year: I read a LOT of women. Most of the people I read were white, although not all (one of my 2015 plans is to work on my reading diversity). I read more physical books than any other type. Good or bad, that’s pretty much standard for me.

However, there were also some changes. I read a lot more memoir this year than I usually do. I got into audiobooks in a big way, and i read my first two eBooks! Not only that, but I branched out to two new genres: I read my first romance novel and my first short story collection. While my college experience definitely helped challenge my reading in a lot of ways, I went a little nuts and got incredibly excited with these first months of reading freedom. After four years of hitting the capital L Literary backlist, I finally got to start catching up on what’s been new in the world of literature recently, reading recently published novels and memoirs and story collections like I haven’t done ever before. And it was AMAZING.

I don’t know what my favorite read was this year, but I definitely have some more memorable books. Suzanne Morrison’s Yoga Bitch touched my life in a big way, and not just because it was the first eBook I ever read (I bought the physical book immediately afterwards). I’m already planning a reread some time in 2015, to see whether it speaks to me in a new way this coming year–I always find that the books that speak to our souls directly are the best rereads because they can show us so much about how we’ve changed. The Interestings was the first buzzy current literary thing I’d read in a while, and it was so great to see such beautiful sentences so recently penned. One of my favorite things about the year is that I got to cap it off by seeing the film adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s Wild, the first book I read in 2014. How many times do you get to do that?!

All in all, it was a wonderful year of wonderful reading. I’m very excited to see what 2015 will bring (I’m doing a reading challenge, more on that later). How was your year in reading? Who and what did you read? What was your favorite?
