Hello, internet people! Hope you’re all settling in and enjoying your holiday season! I’m definitely enjoying having more leisure reading time–I’m even on track to hit my 2016 reading goal of 70 books!
This week’s book is Jen Kirkman’s I Can Barely Take Care of Myself: Tales From a Happy Life Without Kids. This is one I just knew I wanted to read the moment I saw the title, even though I haven’t seen Chelsea Handler’s show and didn’t know anything about Jen Kirkman. I used my audiobooks.com free trial membership from Book Riot Live (thanks, Book Riot) to buy the book on audio and settled in for a great ride.
Admittedly, the first couple chapters/essays were a bit non-non-kid focused. In fact, I almost considered quitting the book because it wasn’t what I signed up for. But then things came delightfully back around to that oh-so-controversial decision to not have kids. I was laughing out loud on my commute to and from work, delighted to have a friend agreeing with me on the no-way side of the kid question.
Jen Kirkman does a wonderful job of rendering those same old conversations about baby making in a hilarious way, tackling the “you’ll change your mind” refrain and the “isn’t that kind of selfish?” mantra. I felt nicely wrapped in a warm blanket of sisterhood as she recounted her stories of encounters with the childrearing women of the world and their plethora of opinions on why everyone (actually–every woman, because I don’t see men getting this hassle) needs to have kids.
All in all, I’m super glad I gave this one a go. I definitely highly recommend this to anyone who is childfree by choice, although maybe not to anyone who has caught themselves evangelizing the kid-having lifestyle because Kirkman gets a bit harsh here and there. I found this hilarious but it might be less fun if you’re the one with the kiddos.
