Hello, book friends, and a very happy February 1st to you! I can hardly believe we’re a whole month in 2023 already, but here we are. So far, it’s been a pretty good start to my reading year, with plenty of good books under my belt for the month of January.
Since we had a guest post last week, it feels like it’s been ages since I’ve really dug in and updated you on what I’ve been reading. Buckle up, because we’ve got some books to get through today!

Recent Reads
I’ve been back on my audiobook game at last, since I caught up on all the new-to-me podcasts I was listening to. I read Josh Peck’s Happy People Are Annoying, which was phenomenal as narrated by the author. I grew up watching The Amanda Show and Drake & Josh, so it was really interesting to hear what Peck has been up to and how he’s navigating the move from child star to adulthood. You can check out my review here if you want to know more.
ARC-wise, I read Jayne Denker’s The Rom-Com Agenda, which I’d really been looking forward to. I did enjoy it, but it fell a bit flat for me unfortunately. I wrote a full review of it since it was a NetGalley review copy, so you can read more about why it wasn’t quite what I hoped here.
I also finished two books I mentioned last time, American Detox and What We Don’t Talk About When We Talk About Fat. I learned a bit from both of them, but neither ultimately gave me quite what I’d been hoping for, either. American Detox didn’t dig as deep into the wellness industry as I expected, and I knew a lot of what Gordon discussed in What We Don’t Talk About from her podcast already.
Whew, what a journey! I think that’s all for recent reads for this week.
Current Reads
I’m working on Sara Novic’s True Biz right now. It’s got an interesting style to it, with how the author shows the difference between dialogue in ASL and spoken dialogue. I’m very much enjoying it thus far.
In the world of nonfiction, I’m reading Amanda Yates Garcia’s Initiated: Memoir of a Witch. I don’t know quite what I expected from this one, but it is definitely different than what I thought it’d be. It’s a strange book, and I’m not that far in, but I’ll definitely be finishing it if only to see where we’re headed.
On audio, I checked out a copy of Olivia Dade’s Spoiler Alert from Libby. I keep meaning to read Dade, so when I saw I could check this one out with a relatively short wait time, I went for it. It was a slow start for me, but I’m pretty invested in it now. I’m about 30% of the way through.
Up Next & On To You
I’ll definitely be picking up another ARC once I finish True Biz, as I’m really trying to stay a bit more caught up with them this year. We’ll see how that pans out for me, mood reader that I am.
Other than that, it’ll be down to what I have access to as we pack up most of the books in preparation for our upcoming move. Thankfully, I’ll have plenty of ebooks to choose from on the Kindle.
What about you, book friends? What have you been reading lately, and how is it treating you?
